Interest Groups

One of the main benefits of joining the u3a is the opportunity to participate in our special Interest Groups which bring together members with similar interests or those looking to get into something different. We have quite a variety of interest groups running very successfully – you can use the links on this page to find out more about each one.

An Interest Group isn’t a course of study, it is a group of members learning from each other and they themselves are in control of what goes on. Sometimes there may be an external speaker or, more rarely, an expert tutor but the principle stays the same: we learn from each other.

Interest Groups do not have to include an expert on the chosen subject, as all members learn from each other, or join together to research their interests. Whilst a member has to be nominated as a convenor or facilitator for each group, they are only as an administrator, that person does not have to be any more experienced in the subject of interest than the rest of the group.

Walking

2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month and a longer walk, date to be notified
Short walks start at the Gilwern car park at 10am. These are very informal walks with the participants choosing their destination on the day. Longer walks will probably involve some ascents and descents and maybe stiles.  We may car share to destinations.  Details will be circulated in advance to members.

Table Tennis

See the Group page for further information
The group meets to play table tennis in doubles format.  Unfortunately, we're FULL at the moment.

Family & Social History

Last Monday of the month at 11am
Our small group of family history enthusiasts are dedicated to preserving the rich history of Gilwern and Llanelly Parish. Whether you're a seasoned family historian or a complete beginner, you are very welcome to join us.

Art

First and third Tuesday afternoon of each month from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.
The Art Group meets twice monthly.  Members are suitably spaced, we manage to create interesting art and have a good catch up. We are all at different levels, from absolute beginners to those who have exhibited, and this mix of abilities gives each of us the opportunity to learn about and to discuss painting and drawing.

Bird Watching

Once or twice a month announced by email to group members
On probably the wettest, coldest and windiest day yet in November 23 the Bird Watching Group held its Inaugural meeting. We went to RSPB Newport Wetlands to view the Starling Murmuration however who could blame the starlings for having an early night!

Crafts4All

1st & 3rd Mondays of the month starting at 1.30 pm
Members share their skills for specific projects e.g. card making etc. or bring along their own current project to work on during the session.

Creative Writing

Usually fortnightly on Thursdays at 10:30
We meet in convivial circumstances at members' homes, taking it in turn to host and provide the ever vital biscuits and other refreshments. We read our stories aloud usually to positive acclaim. We decline to criticise each other's work, we simply enjoy the experience.

Garden Group

4th Wednesday of the Month, sometimes varies
Gilwern U3A Garden Group visit gardens both in the local area and as far away as south Herefordshire. We have been to some fascinating gardens over the years. Many of the owners are members of the National Garden Scheme.

Book Club

Last Monday in the month except Bank Holidays starting at 13:30
Members will take it in turns to recommend 3 books, from which the Group will choose one to read and discuss. The book we are reading in March is: The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn

Bridge

Every Monday from 10.30- 12.30
Like playing BRIDGE? ♠♠♠     If NO, why not?  If you can play Whist or Rummy, you can play Bridge! All you need is the assistance of the friendly Gilwern U3A Bridge Group to guide you through the process.

Photography Group

Fourth Thursday in the month (normally)
We propose to meet monthly to have fun with photography, share, and learn. We propose meeting in person quarterly and online in between.
